I would recommend this experience to all volunteers as I felt the training considerably developed my understanding and ability... we all enjoyed hearing about the different work and experiences we have and learn much from the discussion.
Ray, a long standing volunteer in Norfolk, attended the training at Prince’s Trust House in London alongside other Trust staff and volunteers. He saw the day as an opportunity to learn more about some of the challenges faced by the young people he works with.
“It is sometimes difficult to actually identify the particular challenges and needs of the young people we work with. Whilst we have the support of a Prince's Trust manager I sometimes felt in one to one meetings that I was not able to understand and identify the real challenges of the individual and support accordingly.”
The day was designed to identify these types of barriers, and enable a volunteer or staff member to work beyond them and develop practical strategies to work more effectively with young people.
Amy Turner, Volunteering and Secondment Manager for The Trust, said:
“We are really pleased that we have been able to offer this training opportunity to our volunteers and I am thrilled to hear how much Ray got out of the day. I look forward to us developing more ways for volunteers to enhance their knowledge of this topic in the future.”
There are lots of useful resources available when working with young people with low literacy and numeracy skills, If you would like information regarding this or to hear more about Ray’s experiences please contact [email protected]
