Medicom Innovation Partner to lead discussion on patient-centric devices

Medicom Innovation Partner is to sponsor the World Orphan Drug Congress and lead a round table discussion concerning the need to move to more patient-centric devices.

Orphan drugs form a very important part of the pharmaceutical landscape. An orphan drug is a pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical agent that has been developed specifically to treat a rare medical disease.  Such diseases are often life threatening or very serious. To ensure drugs are developed for such small groups of patients, government intervention encourages the development of drugs by enhancing exclusivity and marketing rights, providing some financial subsidies for clinical trials, and creating tax incentives.

Like mainstream drugs, the growth in biologic based drugs, or biopharmaceuticals, is significant for Orphan diseases. Most biologic drugs require some form of injection for delivery rather than being made into a pill to be taken orally. Additionally, many biopharmaceuticals are being developed for self-injection by the patient themselves rather than having to visit a doctor or hospital regularly.

Medicom Innovation Partner develops innovative drug delivery devices and service solutions for such high value and differentiated drugs. A major focus is on user-centric injectable solutions for such biopharmaceuticals. A key aspect is ensuring these solutions are tailored to meet the needs of the patients that will be using these products. Ensuring these solutions are easy to use and limit variables between injections ensures patients gain confidence, and improves overall safety and efficacy of the drug.

The company says: "We will be hosting a round table discussion with industry leaders at the Congress that focuses on the importance of placing the needs of the patient as the highest priority, when it comes to developing new drug delivery systems. We have entitled our session “Vials are vile: how intelligent device solutions improve patient adherence while dosing reliably to prevent relapses and influence pricing and reimbursement”.

"Here we will discuss how moving from more standard approaches to delivery such as a vial and syringe, to intelligent patient centred devices positively impacts aspects such as engaging and educating patients, adherence and compliance, dosing, pricing and reimbursement.

"We will also be holding partnering meetings throughout the congress and attending the many interesting and diverse sessions available."
