MedImmune scientist wins Royal Society of Chemistry Education Award

MedImmune, the global biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca, is pleased to congratulate Dr Monika Papworth, a scientist based at the company’s Cambridge site, on receiving the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Inspiration and Industry Award 2013 in recognition of her “creative ideas to build scientific understanding of chemistry and biology in schools and science festivals.”

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) gives a number of annual Education Awards each year that recognise excellence and achievements in all areas of chemistry from individuals, teams and organisations across the world. The awards are designed to recognise outstanding work. This year the RSC’s awards were presented by RSC Chief Executive, Robert Parker and RSC President, Lesley Yellowlees at a ceremony held in Brighton last Friday.

Jane Osbourn, Site Leader and Vice President of R&D at MedImmune in Cambridge, commented: “MedImmune is committed to supporting science education and encourages its employees to expose students to the life sciences and biologic medicines, as well as to cultivate the link between science and medicine within the wider community.

"Over the past few years, Monika has championed our programme of outreach into local schools and has devised many inventive ways of demonstrating scientific principles to schoolchildren as young as six. She has tirelessly and enthusiastically devoted many hours of her own time to educational outreach work and has also encouraged her colleagues to become involved with the visits to many local schools. We are all enormously proud of Monika’s achievement in receiving her award from the RSC for Inspiration and Industry. She is an excellent ambassador for both science and for MedImmune.”

Monika Papworth, a scientist in MedImmune’s antibody discovery and protein engineering team, commented: “I would like to thank the RSC very much for my award.  I firmly believe that the pharmaceutical industry has a responsibility to educate and inform the public about the science which is at the heart of what we do and which underpins our dedication to improving the lives of patients.

"It’s immensely rewarding to work with children and to encourage their interest and curiosity in the world around them, and I am delighted to say that the response we have had from schools in the Cambridge area has been overwhelmingly positive. As a result, this outreach work has become embedded within MedImmune’s activities and, I’m pleased to say, the company continues to be immensely supportive and empowers individuals to make bigger contributions, beyond that set out in any job description.”
