‘This Is Civil Engineering’ began in Wales to illustrate what civil engineering is about and to inspire the next generation of civil engineers. Banners are placed on civil engineering projects stating ‘This is Civil Engineering’ with a web address for further information.
The scheme has been so successful it has gradually spread across the UK and came to the East of England in May. The first project to be included is the Steeple Bumpstead Flood Alleviation Scheme. Further projects are already in the pipeline.
‘This Is Civil Engineering’ banners are displayed during the construction of a wide range of infrastructure projects– from flood defence and coastal protection schemes through to sewer upgrades and the opening of new bridges, roads, railways and tram lines.
ICE President Geoff French commented: “Each time you turn on a tap, turn on a light, flush a toilet, catch a train, cross a road you are benefiting from civil engineering.
“The ‘This is Civil Engineering’ campaign promotes the contribution of civil engineering to local communities simply, but effectively. We are proud to now be displaying the banners at 100 prominent sites across the country and look forward to seeing many more projects and schemes sign up in the coming months. We also hope the campaign will pique the interest of young people who are seeking a career that can really make a difference to people’s lives.”
The 100th scheme to sign up to This is Civil Engineering, was the Northern Inner Distribution Road will connect East and West Taunton in the South West. The scheme will consist of approximately 1 mile of new carriageway. It will include a new roundabout at Staplegrove Road / Chip Lane Junction and improvements to the Priory Bridge Road roundabout. There will also be a new bridge over the River tone and Bridgwater & Taunton Canal, the removal of an old railway bridge over Station Road (which will be replaced with a new road bridge), and the renewal of an existing footway / cycle bridge at Chip Lane. The scheme is due for completion in early 2015.
