National Infrastructure Commission welcomed by civil engineers

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has welcomed the announcement of the creation of a National Infrastructure Commission.

The announcement was made by the Chancellor George Osborne today at the Conservative Party Conference. The Commission will be chaired by former Labour Transport Minister Lord Adonis.

In response ICE Director General, Nick Baveystock, said:  “This is a bold and positive move by Government. Infrastructure must be planned for the long term and the pressing need for an independent body, as a mechanism to build political consensus, has been recognised. We look forward to working with the Commission - ICE has already convened a coalition of business, industry and academic leaders to produce an evidence based assessment of the UK’s future infrastructure needs and we hope this can feed into the work. This is about making the right strategic choices.”

ICE is a leading source of professional expertise in transport, water supply and treatment, flood management, waste and energy. Established in 1818, we have over 80,000 members throughout the world. Our vision is to place civil engineering the heart of society, delivering sustainable development through knowledge, skills and professional expertise. We have long worked with government to help it to achieve its objectives. We also work with industry to ensure that construction and civil engineering remain major contributors to the UK economy.
