Peterborough civil engineering extravaganza success

Cathedral Square in Peterborough was the scene for a successful engineering event on Saturday (23 June). From 10am to 3pm the public were invited to learn about the different aspects of civil engineering and career options.

The day was organised by Amy Finbow and Linda Macintosh from JBA Consulting. Apart from their own company supporting the event other partners included Anglian Water, Bentley systems, Great Grounds landscapers and Peterborough Regional College. A range of activities and exhibition stands were on hand including a mini-flume, sand box and test bridge which itself had 120 people try it out.

Civil engineers build our infrastructure from roads, shopping centres, airport and bridges to flood defences. We need more civil engineers and must attract the next generation. Some may think it is a ‘man’s world’ but there are many women civil engineers and we can always do with more.

The day was part of the Institution of  Civil Engineers 'Explore Engineering' weekend to celebrate the Institution's bicentenary. It coincided with International Women in Engineering Day. Up and down the country similar events took place. These include tours of local civil engineering sites. In Norwich on Sunday morning there was a free walking tour along the River Wensum to learn about the town's bridges.
