The discussion is part of the EuroMedtech conference, taking place 7-8 May in Linz, Austria. Dr Gillian Davies, VP Healthtech Strategy, will join other panellists to discuss the challenges and opportunities created from the increasing use of devices where drugs were previously the only treatment and debate whether medtech and pharma companies will be competing or collaborating on these new therapies.
The panel session, taking place at 17:00 on 7 May, will explore how some medtech devices might offer greater value or better treatment where existing drugs have failed, and the process for developing a technology good enough to compete in a market predominated by drugs. The panel will also debate particular challenges, such as reimbursement, for companies that straddle the medtech/pharma boundaries and how to succeed in this new environment.
“As healthcare provision increasingly focuses on outcomes and cost reduction, the drive for disruptive innovation is growing,” said Dr. Davies. “Adapting to these market shifts will be critical to the continued success of businesses operating in the medical space, but getting it right may require a different approach to R&D if companies are to provide the new paradigm of solution-based products in the emerging connected healthcare system.”
Dr Davies will also give a presentation during the event, highlighting trends driving the changing healthcare landscape, such as the shift towards outcomes vs cost and prevention vs treatment. HealthTech Advisory’s focus on this topic is part of its programme to raise awareness and drive discussion around the new healthcare landscape and the implications for healthtech innovation.
