Public invited to explore engineering

People will have an opportunity to learn about civil engineering in a special event taking place in Cathedral Square, Peterborough next Saturday (June 23rd) from 10am to 3pm.

The day has been organised by the Peterborough branch of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in partnership with the Environment Agency and Peterborough Regional College.

Civil engineers build our entire infrastructure from roads, shopping centres, airport and bridges to flood defences. We need more civil engineers and must attract the next generation. Some may think it is a ‘man’s world’ but there are many women civil engineers and we can always do with more.

As well as an opportunity to find out about a great career, a team of engineers will be on hand to explain their work. To help them there will be a mini-flume and sand box.

Explore Engineering weekend is part of ICE’s bicentenary celebrations and coincides with International Women in Engineering Day. Up and down the country similar events are taking place. These include tours of local civil engineering sites for instance in Norwich there is a walking tour along the River Wensum at 10.45, Sunday 24 June.

The Institution of Civil Engineers is reaching a rare milestone in 2018 – a bicentenary. ICE 200 is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the institution’s longevity, recognise the profession of civil engineering and most importantly the thousands of members who make the institution what it is.  ICE will use the bicentenary as opportunity to remind the general public that civil engineers transform their lives for the better and safeguard the future for their families. In doing so, the institution also hopes to encourage young people to see civil engineering as a creative, rewarding and highly enjoyable career.

Events are planned for throughout 2018 and information will be made available on the ICE website.
