Region's catering sector looks for new apprentices

Jobs in the hospitality sector in the region are booming, with vacancies for apprentice chefs, waiters and event assistants looking at an all-time high, say employment experts at Cambridge Regional College.

A range of restaurants, pubs, cafés and hotels are all recruiting new staff, offering jobseekers the chance to take their first steps on the career ladder as an apprentice – earning a wage while they learn on the job.

Cambridge Regional College, a leading provider of apprenticeships, has around 30 vacancies on its books at the moment – a record number for the college’s employment team.

Vacancies include a chef at an award-winning restaurant, front of house apprenticeships at busy cafes – and even a job as an apprentice butler at a Cambridge University college.

Angela Hughes, head of apprenticeship programmes at CRC, said it was a great time to be looking for a job in the sector.

“Cambridge has a growing number of restaurants and increasing numbers of people – both residents and tourists – who want to eat out.

The region’s hotels, pubs and cafés are looking for good staff they can train which is excellent news for jobhunters. We have a record number of apprenticeship jobs available in the hospitality sector at the moment – it’s definitely a booming area.

“Trainee chefs are very much in demand right now, whether it’s at a country restaurant or a busy pub, and waiters and front of house are also needed.

“We even have a vacancy for an apprentice butler at one of the Cambridge colleges – it’s one of the more unusual hospitality jobs on offer, and a great opportunity for the right person.”
