Rising demand sends Cambs recruiter on its own jobs drive

Leading independent Cambridge recruitment company Cooper Lomaz is on a jobs drive of its own to cope with the rapidly growing demand for senior staff from reinvigorated businesses.

“We have taken on eight extra consultants this year already,” said Cooper Lomaz Operations Director Mark Fletcher. “And we are actively looking for another five, which will take our total number of consultants up to 48.”

Cooper Lomaz has boosted the number of consultants working exclusively in Cambridge to 14. There, demand for top IT specialists is especially strong – particularly for roles such as software developers and project managers.  New business is expected to boost Cooper Lomaz turnover from £10m to £13m this year.

And as employers display renewed business confidence, Cooper Lomaz is averaging 540-570 vacancies on its website at any one time, compared with 350 a year ago. The number of vacancies filled by Cooper Lomaz has risen month on month from the beginning of the year.

“What we are seeing at Cooper Lomaz mirrors the recent nationwide survey conducted by KPMG and Markit showing a revitalised confidence in the jobs market,” said Mr Fletcher. “It’s keeping us very busy.”

Cooper Lomaz specialises in filling key management and senior staff vacancies for SMEs and blue chip company clients in seven key disciplines. It is on course to grow its business by 20% this year, working across its Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire heartland…..and pushing deeper into Essex, too.

“Cooper Lomaz has always had a good client base in towns such as Colchester and Chelmsford. On the back of some big contract wins in Essex we now have five consultants focused exclusively on Essex,” said Mr Fletcher. “Cooper Lomaz is getting established in places like Basildon, Southend and Maldon and we are now pushing down towards the London fringes.”

To keep up with demand, Cooper Lomaz is looking for a range of recruitment consultants, from trainees through seniors to principals.

“We are willing to take graduates who have studied business management straight from university. Some B2B sales experience would be useful, but not essential as we have our own comprehensive training scheme,” said Mr Fletcher. “We are also looking at people who have a background in recruitment and want to widen their experience and hone their skills within a bigger company.”

And when it comes to looking after staff, Cooper Lomaz is determined to set the very best example, both to client companies and rivals.

Good salary packages and uncapped commission packages are complemented by private health cover, excellent pensions, life assurance, free fresh fruit and a cycle scheme. There are promises of exciting rewards for meeting targets, including meals out and trips abroad.

“Last year we took groups of staff to Dublin and Paris. In June, 16 consultants will be heading off for a break in Marbella,” said Mr Fletcher. “We have a healthy work-hard-play-hard ethos at Cooper Lomaz. Our consultants work hard for long hours….so we like to give some great perks too.”

Perhaps it is no surprise that in an industry which traditionally has a high staff turnover, several of Cooper Lomaz’ 57 employees have clocked up a decade and more of service.
