Sagentia’s Dr Gregory Berman will be facilitating the discussion, which will focus on market developments and technical advances within the field of injectable drug delivery. Sagentia’s Dr Mark Tuckwell will also be speaking at the event, presenting the opportunities for using smart devices to enable intelligent adherence monitoring for drug delivery; providing benefits to patients, clinicians and payers.
Patient adherence (encouraging patients to take the correct dosage at the correct time), is a growing issue in the pharmaceutical industry. Numerous studies have shown that approximately 50% of patients do not adhere to their drug regimen, even where there is a life threatening condition*. Lack of adherence potentially means patients are not being treated for their disease correctly which can affect their quality of life, and has significant cost implications for the healthcare system and the broader economy, such as lost work days.
Dr Tuckwell will discuss how the industry can use advances in smartphone penetration and wireless communications to monitor and improve adherence in real time. This has the potential to enable patients to take better control of their drug regimen, using devices that they already understand how to use and fit into their lifestyle. If required, the healthcare professional can also monitor their patient’s progress.
Dr Berman comments: “We are seeing increasing interest from the pharma industry in adherence monitoring and using smartphone technology to help patients take their drugs correctly and on time. Once you have batteries on a delivery device, it is no longer a technology limitation to provide the patient and healthcare professional with real adherence data. There are many advantages to using a smartphone to provide this help to the patient, over developing a dedicated piece of hardware, including convenience, lifestyle and familiarity factors for the patient, and cost and platform benefits for the developer. We believe there is a significant opportunity here for the industry.”
Sagentia’s participation in the event is part of its growing activity around connected health. The company is experiencing increased interest from customers wanting strategic advice on technological advances in the field and to develop smartphone-connected medical devices and medical mobile apps. In particular, Sagentia is currently supporting innovative sensing solutions for patient monitoring, custom wireless solutions for medical mobile apps and how to extract and aggregate the data to provide meaningful context-aware results to the user.
