In a visit to Cambridgeshire today, Communities Secretary Sajid Javid urged local leaders across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to “press on” with their devolution deal plans which could bring significant benefits to local people.

The proposed deal could mean that local people can take control of decisions that matter to them, including:

  • an extra £20million each and every year for 30 years to spend on improving their local area
  • a housing boost worth £170 million
  • new devolved transport budgets
  • control and funding over adult skills and employment training

In a round table at Alconbury Weald Enterprise Zone with the leaders of the councils involved, Mr Javid heard for himself how their plans to devolve power and resource from Westminster to the local area, were well on track following the public consultation.

Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said:

“Local leaders in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have put together ambitious devolution proposals to put power into the hands of those who know their area best.

“Today I’ve heard how they’re well on track with their plans towards a Deal and while it’s very much a bottom-up process I’d urge them to press on and take advantage of what’s on offer.

“The deal would make a huge difference with a £600million funding boost alongside massive investment in housing and new powers to help create jobs, improve skills and invest in transport.

“And, as it would be one of the most ambitious deals nationally, I am clear local people would also need to vote for a powerful new Mayor to put them into practice.”

Local people taking charge

As part of efforts to deliver an economy that works for everyone and every part of the country, the Government is devolving wide-ranging powers directly from Whitehall to local people who know their areas best.

In return the government requires that strong governance arrangements are put in place to ensure local leaders are directly accountable to the people that they serve.
