The open day enables Emmaus Cambridge staff to thank those individuals who have supported the organisation over the years. For companions (the people who live on site) the event is a chance to speak to the public and explain how the charity has changed their lives for the better.
In addition to the shop being open as usual, the Emmaus Cambridge team will be conducting tours of the private accommodation block to show people what life in the community is like. There will be a display showing the history and development of Emmaus in the UK and its plans for the future. Visitors will also be able to discover how shopping at Emmaus helps the environment. Music will be provided throughout the main part of the day and there will be tours of the ‘Uprising of Kindness’ garden plus a selection of stalls promoting activities and the people connected with Emmaus.
John Gall, Community Manager at Emmaus Cambridge, said: “Regular visitors to our shops will know a bit about what we do but may not realise that the people they see working in the shop are the people the charity’s money is helping. Emmaus is very much a two-way street. The people who live here give back far more than they receive. For anyone who has not yet visited us, we would encourage you to come and find out more about our work. For those people who have supported us since we arrived in Landbeach please pop along so we can say a huge thank you in person!”
More information about the open day is available on at www.emmauscambridge.org or on posters displayed at the shop. The open day will run from 9am to 5pm at the Community on Green End, Landbeach, Cambridge CB25 9FD.

Emmaus Communities offer homeless people a home, voluntary work and the chance to regain self-respect in a supportive community environment. Residents (known as companions) work full time in the community business, re-selling donated furniture and other household items. Communities aim to become self-supporting through their business, with any surplus used to help others in need. For more information go to: www.emmauscambridge.org
