Seizing the moment

If you don't seize your moment in life, the chance may not come again... as Simon Hall happily and tastily demonstrated in an eating ambush, and now explains...

new deli opening in Cambridge

There are many great examples of the importance of seizing the moment in life.

In a moment, I'll tell you a quick story about my own experience last week, and how I was way ahead of "da yoof" for once.

But first, a quick recap on how seizing your moment can really pay off.

Firstly I'm thinking Google, way back in those days when we were first learning about this new fangled thing called the internet.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin saw there was going to be a big need for a way to search and categorise all that information...

Which is where Google came from.

Or BackRub, as it originally was.

(Can you imagine if that name had stayed? A world without Google, and instead full of Backrubbing. Weird!)

But the point being Page and Brin spotted the moment and seized the opportunity.

And did pretty well from it, I think you'll agree.

Then what about Telsa?

Elon Musk foresaw the growing and ever more urgent need for electric cars to help tackle the threat of climate change.

Hard to believe now, but he was much mocked, really struggled to keep the company going, was often told it was never going to work...

But now, in this more enlightened age, is in pole position to make the most of the new world of electric cars.

Seize the moment, commonly expressed in the Latin phrase carpe diem.

But even if I'm of Cambridge, I'm not that Cambridge, so moving on in straightforward English...

Finally, my own story, which is about cheese, meat, and millenials.

And not quite on the scale of Tesla and Google, but it made me chuckle.

I was invited to the opening of a lovely new Deli here in Cambridge.

As there would be free samples on offer, the kind owner didn't have to ask twice.

(You know me.)

There were quite a few food bloggers and Instagrammers there, which gave rise to an interesting illustration of a divide between the generations.

The influencers and bloggers immediately began photographing and videoing the delicious food.

Whereas we older types took a more traditional approach, and started eating it.

When the young internet warriors had finished their posts they came to try the tasting, and found...

Well, you guessed it.

(Again, you know me.)

"Where's all the food gone?" one asked.

And I just smiled.

The moral of the story being...

Whether it's search engines, electric cars, or filling your face...

  - Seizing the moment in life takes a little thought, to be sure it is a real opportunity.

  - Often some courage is needed to go for it.

  - Not to mention the wit to understand the magnitude of the opening.

But seizing your moment is so very important, because, as the foodies found out...

That beautiful opportunity may not come again.
