Small businesses can grow with funding scheme

Small businesses with big ideas about sustainability are being urged to apply for help and financial backing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded Low Carbon KEEP programme.

On Monday 3 March, the start of Climate Week, the organisation is hosting a support session for companies seeking help with a 12 month project, ahead of the submission deadline on 31 March. Interested businesses can arrange to meet the team at St George’s House on Guildhall Street in Cambridge at any time during the day for some one -to -one guidance about the support available and the application process.

Low Carbon KEEP programme administrator Georgi Mirazchiev said: “We are trying to raise awareness that there is a lot of help and funding on offer for small businesses which have sustainability high on their agenda, and are looking forward to welcoming some new faces on our open day. We’ll help them improvetheir competitiveness by setting up a working relationship between a graduate and an academic, building a mutually beneficial partnership between their business and a local university.”

FLEX (UK) Ltd, part of the Software in Partnership group, is enjoying increased turnover following a collaboration with the University of Essex to develop a structured and achievable marketing and sales strategy for its web-based HR system, YouLink HR.

Norman Liu, Director of Sales and Marketing at YouLink HR, said: “We benefited greatly from the enthusiasm of the student associate asking questions about our business that we would never have thought to ask. Through this project, we became more aware of business theories and practices, so much so that we have identified missing knowledge gaps and have provided training to future proof the organisation.”

To date, the Low Carbon KEEP programme has approved more than 65 projects, with a total allocation of more than £3.2 million of ERDF funding to support collaborations between SMEs and research providers in the East of England. The Knowledge Transfer Programme provides 40 per cent match funding for innovative project ideas.

A 12 month project can have a variety of objectives, such as maximising the energy efficiency of all products produced, designing new products and bringing them to market, and embedding new approaches and processes across the company’s operations to reduce resource consumption.
