Student enterprise takes on the giants at E3 2015

A student-run games development company will be exhibiting at the world’s top computer games show in Los Angeles next week alongside some of the biggest names in the industry.

Rizing Games, run by students at Cambridge Regional College, is expected to be the only UK student enterprise exhibiting at the show, E3 2015, where it will release 13 new titles.

All the games are developed and published by students on the college’s two-year Games Development course, where they study programming, animation, sound, design, marketing and distribution.

The students will be using a £5,000 windfall they won in a competition for young entrepreneurs – run by the National Association of Colleges and Universities Enterprises - to help fund their stand and market their games.

Course tutor Michael Warburton said: “Rizing Games is an exciting and unique games publishing company. We hope to build on last year’s visit to the show when we met industry experts and developed links with Unity for software development and Sony PlayStation for gaining PlayStation Developer status for the students’ games.”

Students Sam Barnett, 19, and Taylor Matheron, 18, will be exhibiting the game they developed together – Operation Swarm, an action game currently on Android and awaiting confirmation from Apple for IOS.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for us and I’m looking forward to talking to other developers in the industry who hopefully will give us some really valuable feedback,” said Taylor.

Sam said: “I am really excited about exhibiting at E3. Students of our age don’t usually get such a great opportunity.”

The students’ games are all featured on their website www.rizinggames.co.uk.
