People can register to vote online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote if they have their National Insurance number to hand – a process which should only take a few minutes. Paper forms can also be requested by calling the council on 01223 457048.
Elections take place across the city on Thursday 4 May for the 12 Cambridge seats on Cambridgeshire County Council, as well as for the Mayor of the new Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority. There is also a Cambridge City Council by-election in the Arbury Ward on the same day.
Antoinette Jackson, returning officer for the local elections, said: “The elections on 4 May are a chance to elect local councillors and the first mayor for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
“The people elected will make important decisions affecting where you live, so I would encourage everyone able to vote to do so. If you are a student wishing to vote in Cambridge, if you have moved recently, or know that you aren’t yet registered, there’s still time to do so at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote before 11.59 on Thursday evening.”
If you are already registered to vote but are planning to be away from Cambridge on 4 May, you can apply to vote by post up until 5pm on Tuesday 18 April.
If you would like to appoint someone else to vote on your behalf you can apply to vote by proxy up until 5pm on Tuesday 25 April.
