Typhoid vaccine shortage is bad news for travellers

A global shortage of typhoid vaccines is really bad news for British travellers, says The Travel Clinic, though it still has stock of the oral typhoid and the injectable vaccine in Cambridge and Ipswich.

Outbreaks have been reported in Malawi, Congo and India. News from Promed:

The Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital Malawi reports it has been recording 30 000 cases of typhoid fever every month since January 2013.

It is thought that the spread of the disease is favoured by poor hygienic conditions and difficulties of drinking water in the area where most people consume water from rivers and springs.

In Congo there is also a surge in the number of typhoid cases., About  1092 cases of the disease have been admitted to hospital . They are seeing many stubborn typhoid cases in which they have to try multiple drugs which prolongs treatment.

According to doctors in Mumbai, cases of viral gastroenteritis and other waterborne diseases like typhoid have gone up in the past two weeks, indicating that people in Mumbai need to be careful about water contamination. Roadside soft drinks have been implicated as the major reason for the sudden rise in gastroenteritis cases.

The Travel Clinic (Cambridge and Ipswich)  still has stock of the oral typhoid and also the injectable vaccine. Although the typhoid vaccines are not perfect and do not offer 100 percent protection, it is important to be aware of food and water hygiene even if one is vaccinated.
