UK Embedded Systems Conference announces 'Developers' Challenge' winner

The Device Developers' Conference 2014 announces the winner of the "Developers' Challenge", a competition to test the knowledge and awareness of software developers.

The organisers of the recent UK Device Developers' Conference have announced that Gareth Owen, a senior scientist at Image Capture in Oldham is the winner of the '2014 Developer’s Challenge', a competition that was run at each of this year's Conference venues.  The winner’s prize was a Kindle Paperwhite.

The Device Developers' Conference is an annual event for developers of intelligent systems and devices. The event explores new technologies, provides workshops and offers an essential networking opportunity for the UK and European embedded systems sector. Over 280 developers attended the 2014 Conference. The event was held in Bristol, Cambridge, Manchester and Uphall, Scotland on separate dates in May and June.

The “Developers’ Challenge” was to identify issues in a C code listing  and it was run by Phaedrus Systems, a company that supplies tools for the development of safety critical and high integrity systems. Programming Research, a world leader in static analysis, created the C code listing. PRQA's software tools offer a close examination of C and C++ code, in order to identify problems caused by language usage that is overly complex, non-portable, dangerous or difficult to maintain. It also provides a mechanism for coding standard enforcement and is widely used in industries such as automotive.

"This competition invites developers to pit their skills against the most advanced software analysis tools," said Chris Hills, Managing Director of Phaedrus Systems, the sponsor of the Developer’s Challenge. "Gareth did well to win this competition, as he was up against a number of very talented and experienced software developers.  Interestingly, most of the competitors wrote notes and "showed their working" which made fascinating reading and did indeed effect the final results."

The "Developers' Challenge" was run to highlight how software analysis tools have become essential for the development of code that is required to perform in an efficient, reliable and predictable manner. With ever more complex code and higher expectation of system performance, even experienced and knowledgeable developers now use software analysis tools to ensure total code integrity.

"The Developer’s Challenge has become an important feature of the Conference,” said Richard Blackburn, Event Manager. “It highlights the fact that software development is very much a highly skilled occupation that requires a great deal of knowledge and experience. For many companies, reliable and effective software is essential for their success in the marketplace and for the protection of their brand.”

Consisting of a vendor exhibition, a broad range of technical presentations and several half-day technical workshops, The 2014 Device Developers' Conference has proven once again to be a worthwhile and productive day for those working in the field of embedded systems and mission critical computing.

Topics covered at the conference included ‘device to cloud connectivity’, ‘using open source software for critical applications’, ‘connecting a TFT display to an embedded system’, ‘advanced debugging techniques’ and ‘a guide to developing using the ARM Cortex-M’.

The overall conference was sponsored by German debug tool company Lauterbach, UK embedded systems training experts Feabhas and Italian industrial computer manufacturer Eurotech.  More than thirty other embedded systems tools and technology companies exhibited and presented at this event.
