The call comes from the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning & Transport (ADEPT) which warns in a letter sent yesterday to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Owen Paterson, that the Government could be using out of date statistics to make key waste policy and investment decisions which could leave the country unable to avoid potentially crippling landfill fines in the future.
Commenting on the call, Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Director General Nick Baveystock said: “The ICE has for many years called for stronger government action to address the very real societal challenge of waste resource management. Future plans must focus on using waste to create high quality recycled and recovered materials that maximise the inherent value of the base materials to the economy. Without this, the UK could generate increasingly poor quality recycled materials for which there are few buyers, and ironically their most likely final destination is landfill.
“Central government and the Devolved Administrations must now focus on creating a policy, regulatory and commercial environment that encourages private investment in infrastructure serving all of the UK’s waste streams.”
