'Wander' art installation is unveiled at CB1, Cambridge

Brookgate, the mixed-use development company, is pleased to announce the installation of Wander, an art project created by renowned artist Dryden Goodwin, into the CB1 development in Cambridge.

The drawings for Wander were created by Goodwin as he journeyed through the city, observing passersby and fellow passengers, capturing the people he saw in the parks, bus shelters, coffee shops, train platforms and river banks.

One hundred of these intensely drawn portrait studies were etched into circular, stainless steel metal plates which have now been inset into the pavement around Cambridge’s new bus exchange.

Sven Topel, Chief Executive of Brookgate said: “The delivery of the CB1 development as a new city quarter for Cambridge is well underway and it is befitting that we now have a significant new piece of public art taking pride of place at the heart of the scheme. As one of the main entry points to the city it is important that we create a welcoming environment for residents, visitors and commuters.  Projects such as Wander, Food Park and our participation in the recent Cambridge Buskers Festival are the beginning of what will be a programme of activity aimed at promoting Cambridge’s cultural highlights at CB1.”

British born artist Dryden Goodwin said: “Making Wander for the new bus exchange at CB1 has been a journey of discovery around Cambridge.  I am excited that the portraits of people I encountered have now been embedded in the paving for the public to discover, as they themselves are on route. They create a permanent record of their own and my wanderings in this fascinating and beautiful city.”

Dryden Goodwin is known for his intricate drawings and use of photography, film and screen-based installations.  The project entitled Wander, refers to both the collecting of the drawings and the viewer’s interaction with the work, describing both the physical movement through space and implying the imaginative process of ‘wondering’ about the nature of the drawn subjects.

Image: Installed in Cambridge, in October 2014, Wander is a series of 100 etched drawings of people encountered by Goodwin as he travelled around the city. Embedded into the paving, people are encouraged to discover the work and the site over a period of time. Commissioned by Brookgate, part of the CB1 development.
