What is your purpose?

When reviewing your marketing plan, it is a good idea to go back to basics to understand what your business is about, what your company mission is and who you are trying to reach. Do you have a vision?

Lesley Fettes of Network Design writes:

Purpose is the most important principle for your business. Without knowing what your purpose is, it will be tremendously difficult to attract your target audience, let alone turn them into customers.

Purpose is your foundation to build from; it defines your brand and culture.

Not only should you review your external communications but also your internal communications. Company purpose creates company culture. If your culture isn’t right within your business, then it will be hard to align your brand message.

Consider:

• What is your company's purpose?

• What are your company's mission and vision?

• What are your company goals?

• Who are your competitors? What can you learn from them?

• What are your marketing objectives? Remember these should be measurable.

• Who are your customers? Build personas of them to really understand whom you need to target.

• Are you offering your audience what they need?

• What is your tone of voice/brand voice? Do you have a brand book?

• Brand book - Can you pull one together or get your design agency to do so? What are the dos and don’ts of your logo, strapline, style of photography, or use of graphical aids, etc?

It can sometimes help to look to other companies for direction to see how they manage their brand, a couple that always stands out to me are:

Brew Dog:

They don’t hide what their purpose is, ‘passionate about craft beer’, it is echoed throughout their brand. It is easy to find on their website because they are proud of what they have achieved and what they aim to achieve.

Tesla:

Tesla to have a vision that they shout about, they “want to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy with electric cars, solar panels and integrated renewable energy solutions for homes and businesses.”
