Words and Music: Dr Rowan Williams & Dr John Rutter in conversation, will take place in Clare College, Cambridge at 2.30pm on Saturday 24 June. In a cross between the BBC’s With Great Pleasure and Desert Island Discs their exchanges will be illustrated by readings and recordings of some of their favourite pieces.

Dr Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and now Master of Magdalene College, is also a published poet. He is no stranger to discussing his musical loves, having appeared on both Desert Island Discs and Private Passions. On these occasions his record choices ranged from Bach, Dowland, William Byrd and Mozart to The Hedgehog Song by the Incredible String Band.

Dr Rutter – composer and conductor, studied music at Clare College, where he was the college’s Director of Music from 1975-79.  He has a special place in the hearts of choirs all over the UK and the US who love to sing his numerous choral works. As the London Evening Standard has declared: “For the infectiousness of his melodic invention and consummate craftsmanship, Rutter has few peers."

Dr Rutter formed the Cambridge Singers as a professional chamber choir primarily dedicated to recording, and he now divides his time between composition and conducting.

This event is presented by Cambridge Summer Music and is sponsored by Hannay Robertson. Tickets are available via CSM’s website: www.cambridgesummermusic.com or from Cambridge Live, Wheeler Street, Cambridge Tel: 01223 357851
