Wysing Arts Centre invites applications from artists for 'The Future' residency programme

Over the past five years Wysing Arts Centre has experimented with different programmatic structures, through residency and retreat formats, to support artists to make new work. This autumn, Wysing will enable four artists to be in-residence for six weeks, from 3 November to 12 December. The artists will be selected from those that apply in response to this open call.

The over-arching theme of Wysing’s 2014 programme, which celebrates the centre’s 25th birthday, is The Future, in which the centre is exploring the potential of the future through what we know of the past. To date two exhibitions in 2014, of artists who have previously been in-residence at Wysing, have addressed these interests, Annals of the Twenty-Ninth Century (16 February–30 March) and Hey, I’m Mr. Poetic (13 April–1 June), ideas which will be further explored in an upcoming retreat Of Our Own Making (19 -23 May).

The autumn residencies will build upon these and Wysing’s forthcoming summer residency programme Futurecamp for which ten artists will be in-residence during a ten week period;  Bonnie Camplin (UK), David Raymond Conroy (UK), Patrick Goddard (UK), Daniel Keller (USA), Rachel Maclean (UK), Shana Moulton (USA), Ahmet Öğüt (TR/NL), Rachel Reupke (UK), James Richards (UK) and Tracey Rose (ZA).  During Futurecamp Wysing will also host five seminars that will address pertinent issues regarding how we live now, bringing together speakers from different disciplines, including anthropology, philosophy, psychology and economics, alongside artists.

Wysing invites artists to propose how they would spend six weeks in-residence at Wysing taking the theme of The Future as a starting point for research. During the residencies, the centre will organise a series of talks and events to expand thinking around the theme and artists are also invited to propose papers, talks, or performances that might be included in this events programme, if appropriate.

Wysing is unique in its approach to supporting artists: it is one of the few arts institutions in the UK to offer regular open calls for artist residencies, that are fully funded with a budget for fee and production of £4000 for six weeks.

The deadline for applications is Monday 16 June, 5pm. Find out more here.

Work created by artists during the residency programme, which is funded by Arts Council England, will be exhibited in a group exhibition at Wysing in early 2015, before being seen by audiences at venues across the UK and beyond.
