Yellow Fever vaccine in short supply

All travellers to parts of South America and Africa are advised to receive the Yellow Fever vaccine at a registered Yellow Fever Centre in the UK. This is a recommendation - it is not mandatory, but is advised for travellers' safety, says The Travel Clinic.

Yellow Fever is an acute viral disease and has been a source of several devastating epidemics. It is endemic in ten countries in South America and over 30 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The World Health Organization estimates that there are approximately 200,000 cases of Yellow Fever per year, with 30,000 deaths.

The Yellow Fever vaccine is very effective and safe, although there have been a few reports of rare adverse events associated with the vaccine. Yellow Fever vaccine is an entry requirement for some countries, but it is advised that travellers to Yellow Fever endemic areas should be vaccinated even if there is no specific requirement.

Yellow Fever vaccine is available at The Travel Clinic for adults and children over 9 months of age.

Following a recent shortage of the vaccine from the manufacturers, The Travel Clinic has managed to secure a supply from another supplier at the increased price of £72.00 per dose.

The clinic says: "We expect availability to gradually improve and aim to reduce the price again when availability improves."
