62% of adults want to be their own bosses. GenZ and millennials lead in aspiration and early-stage activity.
But GenX is catching up in action:
- Consolidating small business ownership, especially capital-intensive or skill-based ventures.
- Buying existing businesses rather than starting from scratch.
Corporate refugees.
Encore careers.
Midlife chrysalis.
Generation squeeze.
Being our own boss was a left-field option when we graduated. The system - and peer pressure - still incentivizes staying put. Especially in Europe, where benefits accrue over time, pension rights are all or nothing, and barriers to reentry are high.
But something's brewing. Sometimes the abrupt reality of layoff or being aged out. Often with the privilege of clarity.
I'm peak GenX. Every day at Sunny Future, we support those who are done waiting - people with significant skills, deep experience, total clarity on their second (or fifth) act, and the feral energy of a generation that raised itself.
GenX is quietly leading the charge on entrepreneurship.
