Chief Building Services Technician

We are seeking an enthusiastic, practical, and proactive Chief Building Services Technician to join our busy maintenance team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a leading academic department, supporting cutting-edge research and teaching in a collaborative and supportive environment.

This is a key role within the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience (PDN), providing essential building maintenance and technical support to ensure the smooth and effective operation of our world-class research and teaching facilities. You will play a vital part in maintaining high standards across a diverse and complex environment.

About the Role

This is a hands-on, varied, and problem-solving role. You will support a wide range of activities across laboratories, building infrastructure, and operational services within the department.

Working across all areas of PDN - including plant rooms, laboratories, controlled environments, and support spaces - you will:

  • Maintain and support critical building systems and specialist laboratory environments
  • Work collaboratively with the University's Estates Management team and external contractors
  • Support small refurbishment projects and laboratory reconfigurations
  • Assist with decant activities and operational moves in response to evolving research needs

About You

We are looking for someone with a solid background in facilities, building maintenance or laboratory support, combined with a proactive and problem-solving mindset.

You will bring:

  • Broad range of general maintenance skills and/or laboratory management
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of supervising team members
  • Confidence working both independently and as part of a team
  • Good IT skills and the ability to adapt to new systems
