Job Description:

We are seeking an enthusiastic Teaching Laboratory Technician to join our dynamic team in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. As part of the teaching laboratory team, you will play a pivotal role in setting up and maintaining equipment for teaching, preparing materials and samples, demonstrating and training new staff and students in the use of experimental equipment and in laboratory safety procedures

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory Management:

  • Manage laboratory resources, including equipment and supplies
  • Maintain a safe and compliant laboratory environment by implementing laboratory safety protocols and carry out risk assessments
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations and certifications
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation

Experimentation and Data Analysis:

  • Provide technical advice and training to lab users (including students) on a range of experiments and techniques including metallography, mechanical testing, microscopy and basic workshop skills
  • Collect and analyse data and provide troubleshooting advice
  • Ensure the accuracy and reliability of experimental results

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and repair of laboratory equipment

The successful candidate will be used to working in a busy environment whilst maintaining high levels of technical support. Previous experience of working in a laboratory setting in Materials Science, other Physical Sciences, or Engineering would be an advantage. However, we are keen to receive applications from candidates who are interested in broadening their skills with a willingness to learn new skills.

The role involves day-to-day contact with academics, students, and other department members using the lab and requires the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people. The successful candidate will be highly organised, methodical and thorough in their approach.
