Dreaming spires and silicon chips
The world’s fourth-oldest surviving university, Cambridge was founded by a group of disaffected Oxford scholars. Its thirty-one constituent colleges and a hundred-plus academic departments are a recognised centre of excellence that’s produced ninety-eight Nobel laureates and fifteen prime ministers — not to mention several members of Monty Python.
Although it can match Oxford for the classics, Cambridge has always been noted for science, producing some of the greatest scientists in history, from Sir Isaac Newton to Stephen Hawking. And, in spite of its mediaeval buildings, the university doesn’t live in an ivory tower, having close links to many of the high-tech businesses in the surrounding “Silicon Fen”.

Project Threshold is a strategic change programme initiated and run by Cambridge Assessment, the brand name of the university’s Local Examinations Syndicate. Cambridge Assessment describes the project as “designed to deliver business transformation through the replacement of legacy technology and processes with a common set of up-to-date software solutions”.
They approached us to develop the branding for a large conference, aiming to set out the project’s achievements and create an executive programme. We also needed to brief the programme’s key holders and deliver a question and answer session on the change management process needed.
For this purpose, we developed four brand colours, as well as creating banner stands, signage and staging material, along with delegate badges, presentations and conference handouts for the event. We had to print and produce all of the material in seven days and install it the night before the event. We pulled out all the stops to achieve this with enough time to spare for any hitches — not that there were any.
Not all members were able to attend. To prevent anyone being left out, we created social media material to keep them up to date during the conference, as well as email campaign collateral and ongoing feedback from Q&A session.
Education and business — partners for progress
We at Creative Solutions have always recognised that education and business are both at their strongest when they work together. The demands of businesses and their customers drive the need for progress, while the genius and focus that can be found within the walls of a university like Cambridge deliver that progress.
Over its eight centuries, the University of Cambridge has provided us with the scientists and thinkers to drive change and the leaders to direct it. And it’s even made us laugh sometimes. Not bad, for a mediaeval institution.
