Ever wanted to dig for fossils, code your own program, or step inside a giant Venus flytrap? This summer, Abbey People is inviting families to a free day of discovery packed with science activities for all ages. From genetics experiments to crafts and curiosity-led challenges, Eager Explorers is all about trying things out, asking questions, and having fun while learning.
Taking place on Wednesday 20 August 2025 at Cambridge United Football Ground, Newmarket Road, Eager Explorers is a full day of hands-on exploration designed to build confidence and spark creativity in science.
A science event for all the family, the day is aimed at children and young people and offers a wide range of fun, hands-on activities to try with parents and carers. For older young people, it’s also a chance to explore the many careers in science they may not have come across before, and to discover pathways into exciting fields they might not have considered.
Nicky Shepard, CEO of Abbey People, said: “Abbey is a part of Cambridge that often feels disconnected from the city’s science and tech opportunities. We want young people here to know that these careers are for them too. By bringing hands-on science experiences into the heart of the community, we’re helping to break down barriers and spark interest in futures that feel both exciting and possible.”
Eager Explorers is part of Abbey People’s ‘Abbey Together’ programme with King’s Hedges Family Support Project, aimed at bringing the local community together through free, engaging events.
The event is delivered in partnership with a wide range of local organisations including:
- Wellcome Connecting Science
- Cambridge University Botanic Garden
- AstraZeneca
- Ninja Theory
- University of Cambridge Museums
- Whipple Museum of the History of Science
- Cambridge Science Centre
…and many more.
