Assembly: A Survey of Recent Artists’ Film and Video in Britain 2008–2013 will be taking place at Tate Britain from 23 November until 15 March 2014.
The programme will recognise and celebrate the breadth of internationally acclaimed single-screen films and is the first major survey of new artists’ film in Britain in over a decade.
The idea for the programme was conceived by Dr Payne and independent curator Andrew Vallance two years ago. In addition to a film by Dr Payne, Assembly also features work by fellow Anglia Ruskin film academics Jennifer Nightingale and Neil Henderson.
Dr Payne, Senior Lecturer in Film and Media Studies at Anglia Ruskin, said: “Two years ago Andrew Vallance and myself approached Stuart Comer, who at the time was curator of film at Tate Modern, and is now chief curator of media and performance at MoMA in New York.
“Film and video have become increasingly important mediums for contemporary artists, especially in the UK. You are now just as likely to see film in a gallery as painting or sculpture.
“However, there hasn’t been a significant survey of film and video for over a decade and we thought it was timely to bring together a range of works made by a diverse range of artists, who have been working and screening their films in a variety of contexts.
“We asked 36 leading curators, critics, writers and academics to nominate what they saw as the 10 most important works from the last five years. The selected films are by artists from a variety of backgrounds, ranging from gallery artists who have gone on to make feature films, to underground experimental filmmakers.
“The final programme features over 80 artists, including Turner Prize and Jarman Award winners, and films that have won accolades on the film festival circuit.”
The Monday evening programme of screenings will be followed by discussions with invited speakers and the artists, while Sunday afternoons will showcase artists’ feature films, including prizewinning works by Clio Barnard and Ben Rivers.
The screenings will take place in the Clore Auditorium at Tate Britain and cost £5 to attend (£4 concessions). The programme will be launched with a special free screening during The House Warming Party on Saturday, 23 November to celebrate the reopening of Tate Britain.
