Breast cancer fundraisers help improve treatment for patients at Addenbrooke’s

Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust yesterday (Monday) held a tea party at the hospital’s Cambridge Breast Unit to celebrate an amazing total of over £60,000 raised for the charity’s Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal 2016.

Money raised has provided a vital table-top specimen x-ray machine, which will enable the team at the Cambridge Breast Unit to screen one more patient each day.

Supporters of the Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal 2016, kindly sponsored by Neaves & Neat Employment Services and Mr Hugh’s rapeseed oil, have been busy raising the funds through cakes sales, hosting tea parties, organising charity balls, a fashion show supported by Rigby & Pellar, head shaves, a Stagecoach charity calendar as well as a donation of £5,000 from The Pink Ribbon Foundation.

Over 40 fundraisers, staff, patients and guests attended the event where the new machine was ‘unveiled’.

The machine, used to examine breast tissue at clinic appointments, will help to improve treatments and enable waiting times to be reduced, meaning less anxiety for patients at what is already an extremely stressful time.

Dr Penny Moyle, consultant radiologist at the Cambridge Breast Unit said: “The specimen x-ray machine will improve the diagnosis of small calcifications that may be cancer, in a vacuum biopsy. With this, we can analyse the specimen faster and improve patient safety and comfort, which in turn will help us to screen more patients. Many thanks to everyone who has helped make this possible.”

This year the Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal asks people to get together with family, friends, work colleagues or fellow students for a fundraising afternoon tea party and help to raise even more money to support patients with breast cancer.

Emily Willdigg, Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust’s Events Fundraiser said: “We’re so delighted that with your help we have funded this vital new machine. We hope to improve on this success in 2017, so please get baking and invite lots of friends and family to join you and help make a difference for future patients with breast cancer.”
