Cambridge entrepreneur launches Code School for 16-19 year olds

With University fees approaching £10,000 per year, school leavers are increasingly looking for alternatives to the traditional three-year BA. Local entrepreneur Rob Percival is looking to provide just that to 100 tech-savvy youngsters in the summer of 2014.

“The demand for top-tier engineering talent sharply outweighs the supply in almost every market", says Percival, 33. "We want to offer talented young people a way to make their idea for an app, game or website a reality."

Code School will run for six weeks during July and August, and will be taught by developers from local tech companies, including Red Gate and Jagex. Students will not need any prior coding experience - just a desire to learn and the motivation to turn ideas into completed projects.

Thanks to close ties with fast-growing companies, the best students will be considered for jobs and internships, as well as being given the tools to work freelance or to start their own businesses.

"There is a wealth of untapped talent amongst young people in Cambridge, as well as a number of great companies searching for talented individuals. Code School will give young people the tools they need to get started on a very exciting journey."

There will be competitions throughout the course for the group that can produce the best app or game, make the most money and generate the most buzz. The course will cost £1,000, with bursaries available for the most able students.

Code School will also function as a MOOC (massively open online course), with lectures and learning materials available online for free.

Sixteen to 19 year olds can register their interest now at www.codeschool.org.uk. Press or industry enquiries to info@codeschool.org.uk.

Code School is currently looking for more industry partners. Any Cambridge Network members who are interested in getting involved can contact Rob Percival directly on robpercival@cantab.net
