Cambridge Live announces music acts for this year’s Big Weekend

The first names have been announced for this year’s Big Weekend, the annual free weekend of entertainment held on Parker’s Piece, which this year takes place from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th July.

The Big Weekend, which is provided by Cambridge City Council and organised by Cambridge Live, is always a highlight of the city’s calendar. Cambridge Live is also pleased to announce that, in the year that Addenbrooke’s Hospital marks its 250th anniversary, the theme of this year’s event will be health and wellbeing.

Headlining the Friday night will be disco superstars Boney M, led by the 1970s vocal group’s original singer Maizie Williams. Adding to the Friday line-up is dance pop DJ Dario G, with legendary 2-Tone artists The Selector and reggae act Desmond Dekker Band the Aces, featuring Delroy Williams and Glenroy Oakley, confirmed as headline acts for the Saturday evening.

Also on the Saturday bill are Cambridge based rock band The Treatment who have toured with the likes of Kiss, Mötley Crüe and Status Quo, and there will be a short set from Cambridge-founded group The Dowsing Sound Collective, described as half way between a choir and a band, whose incredible set lists range from club anthems to Scandinavian soundscapes.

The Big Weekend is a free event which provides diverse entertainment for all Cambridge residents. As well as the music on the main stage the Friday night culminates in a spectacular fireworks display. Saturday is a family fun day which includes music acts throughout the day, interactive stalls in the Health and Wellbeing Village, sports and science workshops, face painting, a French market, a gaming lab and, for the first time, a mobile cinema.

On Sunday the focus switches to music and culture from around the world with music from around the globe on the main stage and the annual celebration of Asian music, dance, fashion and food in the city’s annual the hugely popular Cambridge Mela.

The Big Weekend is part of the City Council’s year round City Events programme, organised by Cambridge Live. The wide-ranging programme this year also includes Jazz and Brass in the Parks, a series of free open-air concerts on Jesus Green, Christ’s Pieces and Cherry Hinton Hall, the Mayor’s Day Out, a great day of entertainment for senior citizens, and Midsummer Fair Market, a traditional market featuring a selection of stalls including street food, crafts, clothing and jewellery.

Sara Garnham, Chair of Cambridge Live, said: “Cambridge Live is very pleased to be working with Cambridge City Council to organise the Big Weekend and other City Events for a second year. We are delighted that Addenbrooke’s will be taking part to mark its 250th anniversary, and we are very grateful to ARM for their generous support. We have a wonderful line-up of entertainment for the people of Cambridge to enjoy.”

Cllr Richard Johnson, Executive Councillor for Community Arts & Recreation, said: “I am delighted that there such a strong and varied line-up for this year’s Big Weekend, one of the City’s most popular free community events. This year’s theme of health and wellbeing is something everyone can relate to and be part of.”
