Celebrating Carnevale in Italy

Carnival in Italy

At this time of the year, Carnival is celebrated in Italy .

The word Carnival has Latin origins and refers to the day after the revelry of “Shrove Tuesday”, the time when the period of abstinence and fasting known as Lent begins.

One of the most famous celebrations of Carnival is in Venice, where the city is transformed for a few weeks into a vibrant stage of colours.

Carnival in Venice reached its maximum splendour in the 18th Century, and resonated throughout Europe.

Dressing up became an indispensable mode of expression in that period, with transgression, levity and fun always in the air.

The most popular masks then were: Harlequin, Pantaloon and Colombine.

Times have changed now and alongside the classic costumes and masks, we have more “modern” looks, but the fact remains that Venice’s unique streets and squares continue to be invaded by thousands of tourists every year, filling the city with fun and light-heartedness.

But there is more to Carnival than masks, a lot more.

During Carnival, all cake shops and bakeries make specialities which you can only get at this time of the year.

Depending on the region you are in, they have different names: crostoli, chiacchere, frittelle, castagnole or zeppole.

As you can see, you are spoilt for choice! All kinds of treats to enjoy, mostly sweet but savoury too!
