Construction continues on Histon Road project

Better active travel and bus journeys along Histon Road have moved a step closer as construction on the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s project continues to progress.

Histon Rd/ Victoria Rd junction

Phase A, of the project (Huntingdon Rd/Victoria Ave junction) is nearing completion with the final surfacing of the footpaths underway. The new road layout with segregated cycling lanes and upgraded crossings will provide smoother and safer active travel journeys.

Contractors are finalising all of the new kerbs and footpaths along the western side of the road before the final carriageway surfacing can take place. Work has also begun to remodel the junction of Histon Road with Gilbert Road.

When complete, the Histon Road project will provide vastly improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists and additional infrastructure to help improve public transport journeys for people travelling into Cambridge from north of the city.

Cllr Neil Gough, Vice-Chair of the GCP’s Executive Board, said: “It’s very pleasing to see the significant improvements that have been already been made to Histon Road with wider roads and excellent cycling lanes. When this project is complete, it will really help to improve the quality of the air and cut congestion on a busy route into Cambridge.

“The inbound road closure remains in place for the duration of construction and I’d like to thank people for their patience while we carry out this work, which will mean much better journeys in the long term.”

The city-bound road closure begins just south of the King’s Hedges Road junction to allow inbound traffic to access King’s Hedges Road, as well as construction and farm traffic to enter the Darwin Green site.

A diversion via the A14, Milton Road and Victoria Road is signposted from the A14. Cyclists and pedestrians are able to travel both ways and residents and business owners are able to access their properties throughout.

The temporary closure impacts the inbound Citi 8 and Busway B bus routes with the Citi 8 bus being diverted via King’s Hedges and Arbury and the Busway B service via Milton Road. Both bus services still serve Histon Road outbound.

A new shuttle bus, route 8H, has been provided to compensate for the loss of inbound services on Histon Road. This circulates from the city via Victoria Road to Histon Road and to Orchard Park.
