CRC 'central' to apprenticeship agenda

Cambridge Regional College’s apprenticeship programme has been described as ‘central’ to the apprenticeship agenda in the county by the mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

James Palmer, who visited the college and talked to students and apprentices, met Principal Mark Robertson and discussed working together to promote apprenticeship opportunities across the county after the college’s recent merger with Huntingdonshire Regional College.

He toured the college, including the state-of-the art engineering department, where he chatted to apprentices Bradley Montague and Harvey Andrews from Newcom Precision Engineering in Earith.

He visited the Catering department and met apprentices Alice Clayden and Gemma Steele – former CRC students who won culinary competition Passion to Inspire 2016 before starting their current apprenticeships with Trinity Restaurant and Cambs Cuisine.

The mayor rounded off his visit at the college’s science labs, where he met students and award-winning lecturer Ursula Lowe, who won the inaugural Excellence in Further Education Science ENTHUSE Award for her outstanding teaching.

After his visit, Mr Palmer said: "As always it was fantastic to meet a number of apprentices from a variety of different fields, all passionate about what they do. Cambridge Regional College are central to the apprenticeship agenda in Cambridgeshire and I'm keen to support them."

CRC Principal Mark Robertson said it had been an excellent visit.

“We were delighted to have the opportunity to welcome the mayor to Cambridge Regional College. These are exciting times for the college as we develop an outstanding and highly responsive organisation for the students, employers and communities that we serve across the county,” he said.

“We look forward to playing a significant part in supporting the mayor’s initiatives to promote skills development and apprenticeship opportunities more widely across the region.”
