FlexEnable joins SPIE

FlexEnable, the leader in the development and industrialisation of flexible organic electronics, has become a member of the international society for optics and photonics (SPIE).

Founded in 1955, SPIE brings engineers, scientists, students, and business professionals together to advance light-based science, engineering and technology. It is an educational, not-for-profit organization with a global constituency of more than 258,000 people from 184 countries.

FlexEnable’s technology applications include flexible and biaxially formable, ultra-thin and light active liquid crystal cell optics (LC Optics) for AR/VR headsets and smart glasses, automotive smart windows, Organic LCD displays (OLCD) for consumer electronics, automotive displays and switchable ePrivacy displays.

For AR headsets, the technology enables local ambient dimming films weighing less than 1 gram that drastically improve the contrast of virtual images against the real world background, for a more immersive experience. For AR/VR and smart glasses, it enables tunable LC lenses that allow the user to focus their eyes more naturally on virtual objects located at different distances.

FlexEnable will present a paper on ‘Biaxially curved ultra-thin, light ambient dimming LC films for AR headsets’ at SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco on February 1st.

About FlexEnable

With around 600 patents and patent applications and more than 1000 engineering years in the development of organic materials and manufacturing processes, FlexEnable is the worldwide leader in organic electronics. We have developed and industrialised a complete low-temperature manufacturing process for small and large-area organic electronics on ultra-thin plastic substrates. FlexEnable also owns the best-in-class, highest-performance organic materials - FlexiOM™ - making us the only company to offer both organic materials and industrially-proven enabling manufacturing processes. FlexEnable is bringing organic electronics technology to market in a fabless business model. Our processes and solutions have been developed for use on existing flat panel display lines, leveraging existing assets and supply chain. Applications for FlexEnable’s technology include flexible Organic LCD displays (OLCD) for consumer electronics and automotive, and flexible biaxially formable active Liquid Crystal Cell (LC Optics) that actively modulate, steer and focus light for applications including AR/VR optics and smart glasses, automotive smart windows and switchable ePrivacy displays. We also work directly with OEM and Tier 1 companies on developing next generation products, from design to prototyping and product qualification all the way to volume production.
