In a post-Brexit world we believe it is becoming even more important to learn languages. As an international school we have many languages present in our community and we celebrate diversity.
All of our students have spent years studying languages and English is our shared language, but wouldn't it be great to learn a new language together?
The students decided we would learn Portuguese as none of us speak it, and we have given ourselves just six weeks, with only two hours a day of intensive learning.
Aran Jones is the man behind the highly successful ‘SaySomethingIn.com’ website and he joined us to help launch our language learning experiment on Monday 31st Oct.
Our aim is to be able to have meaningful communication with a native Portuguese speaker in just sixweeks.
Aran Jones was so excited about our plan that he drove the five hours from his home in North Wales to offer us some advice regarding language acquisition and something he refers to as immersion. Aran believes the secret to our success will be the two hours each week that everyone at Ci6 will spend only conversing in the target language of Portuguese.
This is a really exciting project and following Aran’s advice we began to build our living experiment by labelling all of the objects throughout the sixth form with the Portuguese word for it and other complimentary phrases alongside the words.
For example, the front door is labelled ‘porta da frente’ but it also has a label for welcome ‘bem vinda’.
