Going back to school for our businesses

Education? No, surely we’ve all had enough of school, haven’t we? We’re out in the real world of business now. It’s not quite as simple as that, though. Business and education need one another, and two events coming up in the New Year make the most of that — from opposite ends of the academic world.

Getting them young

Neither design nor technology can ever stand still. Innovation is essential, and any company that doesn’t want to be left behind needs to keep an open mind about the future. And we’re very aware at Creative Solutions that the next generation of designers and technology geniuses are… well, the next generation. They’re in school.

It works the other way, too, and technology is essential for those budding geniuses to develop their full potential. The Bett Show, in January, is an industry show dedicated to educational technology.

The show’s mission is “to bring together people, ideas, practices, and technologies so that educators and learners can live up to their true potential.” To this end, 850 leading companies, 103 edtech start-ups and over 34,700 attendees from 103 countries will gather to explore ways of pushing educational technology beyond its current levels.

The Bett Show is on at the Excel London between the 24th and 27th January. If you have any connection with educational technology, who knows? Your solutions may be what inspires a child to take your company to a new level in twenty years’ time.

Academics and business

At the other end of the education spectrum, the UK and Ireland Chapter of the Academy of International Business is holding a conference on “international business strategies in a changing commercial and political landscape” at the University of Birmingham.

The AIB describes itself as “the leading association of scholars and specialists in the field of international business”, offering a balance of academic analysis and practical knowledge. The conference takes place in an international business environment that’s more unstable than for many years, and nowhere more than pre-Brexit UK.

Topics already declared range from “global value chain and manufacturing turbulence” to “internationalisation of SMEs and international entrepreneurship”. Or maybe you have something to add. In that case, you have until 12th January to submit, or else you can register to attend by 23rd March for the conference in April.

We like to think that we never stop learning at Creative Solutions — because in business, the day we stop bothering to learn, we may as well shut down. It’s never too late to go back to school — even if it’s only for one day.
