HSE chair visits Cambridge Regional College

Dame Judith Hackitt, Chair of the Health and Safety Executive and a champion of women in engineering, has praised Cambridge Regional College’s outstanding facilities.

During a visit to CRC – her first to a further education college – she said it was “inspiring” to see the quality of facilities available to the students and the high standard of training.

Dame Judith, who met engineering students Beth Pedlar and Emily Tillett during a tour of the college, said it was important to encourage girls to think about studying an engineering course. “They should come here and have a look and see what rewarding jobs there are at the end of it,” she said.

Dame Judith, who was recognised in the New Year’s Honours for her services to health and safety and for her work as a role model for young women in engineering, toured the college’s engineering and construction facilities as well as motor vehicle and catering departments.

“It is really inspiring to see the quality of the facilities which are most impressive - who wouldn’t want to come and study here and have access to all these fantastic facilities,” she said. “It is very clear people are being trained to do things the right way.”

Paul Breheny, head of STEM subjects at CRC, said it had been an excellent visit.

“It was a pleasure to welcome Dame Judith to the college. She seemed very keen to speak to our students and discuss their next steps into careers in their subjects. She obviously enjoyed her visit and was impressed with the college facilities that support the curriculum.”
