Independent Cambridge - from eyecare to stylish eyewear

The recently published second edition of the colourful and informative book, Independent Cambridge, celebrates the fantastic range of independent retailers we have on our doorstep. Read this week about Clamp Optometrists.

Stylish, contemporary and with a thread of true passion running through all they do, the team behind Clamp Optometrists may be bang on trend with their unique designer eyewear collection, but they are also continuing a long tradition of independent opticians at their Georgian, city centre premises.

Opticians Hyman & Sons first operated from the site in 1908 and after various changes in ownership, Clamp Optometrists opened their doors in 2002. The current team consist of five optometrists, three dispensing opticians, five receptionists and one trainee optometrist. From eye care to eyewear, every member of the small team contributes to its eclectic pool of talent.

Known for their specialism in eye care, including for glaucoma, dry eyes and community health, the
practice is also defined by its personality and friendliness.

This personality is most obvious in Clamp’s luxury eyewear ranges – the vast majority of which come from niche design companies including Paul Smith, Leisure society, Mykita, Barton Perriera, Maui Jim, Moscot and Bevel. In most cases, Clamp are the only stockist in the Eastern region of the UK. They work with designers who are able
to react more quickly to reflect current trends. Clamp have such a close relationship with most of them, that customer comments as well as those from the team, can be fed back to influence and to evolve the spectacle design.
