AVICCS (The International Workshop on the Impact of Auditory and Visual Impairment and its Community Care Solutions), held in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, brought together academics from several universities to present their latest research on auditory and visual impairment. The symposium was also held to stimulate discussion around low-cost innovative solutions in primary and secondary healthcare.
Keynote speakers included Anglia Ruskin’s Professor Rupert Bourne, who presented research into the causes of vision loss in China, Professor Brian Moore from the University of Cambridge, and Professor Elena Wong from Hong Kong University. There were also talks by academics from other universities including Beijing, Manchester, Surrey, Glasgow, City University, and South Eastern University China.
Anglia Ruskin’s Professor Shahina Pardhan, co-chair of AVICCS, said: “This important international event brought together world-leading academics from several institutions to share their research and find innovative solutions to the healthcare challenges of today. This was possibly the first combined international vision and hearing event of its kind.
“It was an extremely enlightening event and I thank our colleagues in China for their hospitality and look forward to building stronger links to find solutions for people suffering with auditory and visual impairment across the world.”
The event was supported by the National Natural Science Fund of China, the British Council Researcher Links, and the Newton Fund.
