Local children take over to have their say about life in Cambridge

Primary school children are set to have their say about making Cambridge a better place to live, at a special Takeover Day tomorrow (Friday 17 November).

The event, hosted by Cambridge City Council’s Children and Young People’s Participation Service (ChYpPS) will see children from four primary schools sharing ideas and potential solutions to some of the challenges facing the city.

Among the activities on the day will be a workshop on homelessness with Jimmy’s Night Shelter, focusing on what it is like to be homeless and how to help people affected by homelessness.

The Cambridge Greater Partnership (GCP) will be listening to the children’s views on how cycling and transport could be improved in Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire as part of GCP’s ‘Big Conversation’.

Participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about democracy and take part in a debate on whether Cambridge should have a children’s council or young mayor.

During the afternoon a panel of adults including councillors, council officers and guests will listen to the children’s feedback from the morning’s activities and suggest ways in which they might be able to help their ideas become reality.

Cllr Richard Johnson, Executive Councillor for Communities, said: “We are looking forward to seeing children from four Cambridge primaries at The Guildhall, and hearing what I am sure will be some exciting and imaginative ideas to improve life in Cambridge.

“Children can sometimes feel disconnected from important decisions that are taken on their behalf, so events like these are a great way of ensuring that children’s views are heard.”
