New Chief Financial Officer appointed to Cambridge University Hospitals

Paul James has been appointed in an executive position as Chief Financial Officer at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH). Paul is currently the director of finance for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the largest of Scotland’s health boards.

Jane Ramsey, Chair of CUH, said: “On behalf of the Board I am delighted to welcome Paul as the new Chief Financial Officer for the Trust and look forward to working with him. Paul brings a significant amount of experience of financial leadership as well as a very strong understanding of the complexity and broader context of an organisation like CUH. His perspective will support the Trust in delivering better healthcare for our patients, balancing cost-consciousness with excellence in care whilst also helping CUH to explore its potential for growth and innovation.”

Paul is a chartered accountant. After qualifying in 1978 he spent several years in industry and consultancy. During his career Paul has worked with both central and local government and public sector organisations. He has held finance director positions in both the private and public sectors and he has also been a partner in two professional firms.

Paul said: “I’ve really enjoyed meeting the members of the management team and Board at CUH and look forward to being part of the team. One of my responsibilities will be to ensure a sound financial footing for the Trust as it progresses its ambitious plans for the future. This is an exciting and interesting opportunity for me and I’m hoping that my commercial background will enable me to generate support for the services and care we provide for patients and add some real value to CUH’s future.

“CUH is part of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and demonstrates strong links with a world-class university and with Papworth Hospital. The excellence in research, teaching and clinical expertise which this expresses genuinely differentiates CUH from other trusts and creates real opportunities that I hope to see us turn into reality.”

Paul brings this breadth of experience to his role at CUH. He has previously worked at the Ministry of Defence, the Department of Health, the Metropolitan Police, a London council and a primary care trust.
