Following public consultation in September and October last year, a revised framework for Mitcham’s Corner was presented to Development Plan ScrutinySub-committee this week.
The framework has been updated to respond to key issues identified by people who responded to the consultation.
Concerns raised by the respondents to the consultation were wide ranging, and included:
- Safety concerns regarding shared space and how cyclists would be safeguarded
- Potential increase in congestion
- The relationship with City Deal projects on nearby roads
- Levels of student accommodation and aparthotels, and their effect on the local sense of community
- Car and cycle parking
- Bus service provision
- The height of new buildings in the area and
- The need for guidance regarding the Tivoli Building and the Barclays Bank on Chesterton Road.
The area covered by the document is to the north of Cambridge city centre, centred around the one way system where Chesterton Road, Milton Road and Victoria Road meet.
The Mitcham’s Corner Development Framework document sets out three main objectives for the area:
- Creating a connected place
- Improving the district centre
- Creating places for people.
It will be used to ensure that future development in the area is appropriate to its context and delivers the aspirations set out in the emerging Local Plan for Cambridge.
Cllr Kevin Blencowe, Executive Councillor for Planning Policy and Transport, said: “We were pleased with the response to the consultation on this important framework which will help guide the development of Mitcham’s Corner in the future.
“The main issues raised by people in the consultation have been considered and responded to in this revised document. We now feel we have an even clearer view of the approaches that the local community, and people who visit this part of Cambridge, wish to take to help it thrive in the years to come.”
Cllr Blencowe approved the amendments to the Mitcham’s Corner Development Framework following consultation, in anticipation of the Local Plan for Cambridge being adopted.
