Direct Line for Business chose the college, one of the country’s leading apprenticeships providers, to illustrate the opportunities and experiences provided by apprenticeships on its new information hub for careers in the construction trades.

Crispin, Head of Construction Crafts at the college, was interviewed for the website’s Tools of the Trade section in the knowledge centre, providing detailed information on the practicalities of an apprenticeship, while Mark, winner of Electrical Apprentice of the Year, talked about his experiences and future plans.

Mark said he had learned a wide range of practical and employability skills as part of his apprenticeship.

“I had no experience of electrics when I started my apprenticeship so I’ve learned everything from scratch. But the construction industry gives you the opportunity to learn so much more than what you’re taught to complete your job,” he said.

“You’ll learn the differences in how things are done in domestic and commercial builds, and pick up knowledge from working alongside other tradesmen with different jobs. You grow an enthusiasm for working to complete a project for someone, which is really satisfying.”

John Malone, Director of the Construction and Motor Vehicle Faculty at Cambridge Regional College, said the college had been delighted to be asked to be featured on the new website.

“Construction is a very popular career path, particularly through an apprenticeship, and the new Direct Line website is a great centre of information on the construction trades and apprenticeships. I’m very proud to have one of our Professional Departmental managers and an award-winning apprentice featured on the site,” he said.
