Success for Managers Tip #67: How to grow your power

Do you ever have moments when you feel overwhelmed, frustrated or powerless because there’s so much wrong with the world or your partner, your boss, your team, your family, your neighbours, your clients, the politicians…? Do you find yourself yelling at the TV, telling ‘them’ how to put the world to rights?

Madeleine Morgan of Growu writes:

Then I’ve got seven ways you can develop your ‘personal power’ and feel you’re in charge of your life, your career or your business this week.

In moments like that, it’s important to remind yourself of the ‘personal power’ you have to influence events and manage your mindset, even if you haven’t got a powerful title or position.

  1. Get clear about what you really want – you are most powerful when you are focused on what you want. You are most powerless when you focus on what you don’t want – it’s like trying to drive forward while looking in the rear-view mirror…all the time.
  2. Choose a priority – this helps you avoid the powerlessness of overwhelm. You can’t fix the whole world straight away. :)
  3. Only then are you ready to explore your options for making what you want to happen.
  4. Make sure you have the skill to make your actions effective… avoid self-sabotage.
  5. Take your first positive step towards a powerful change – let action kill any doubts. For instance, clarify expectations with a colleague or family member who disappointed you or who you feel is underperforming.
  6. Notice what’s right with you, the other person, your situation or the world. Express this in some way e.g. by writing it down or telling someone. This puts you in a more energetic and positive mindset to tackle the rest. Recently, I helped a client write his Linkedin profile and he said it helped him remember his strengths and build his confidence.
  7. Join with like-minded people, a mentor or coach to make things happen faster

So your mission today, should you accept, is to take the first action on the list that you haven’t tried yet. :)
