UK conference explores software reliability in automotive systems

This year's UK Device Developers Conference will be offering both workshops and technical presentations that explore the development of safety critical code in automotive systems.

Touching on topics such as software architectures for reliable systems, toolsets for the development of software to ISO26262 certification and debug tools to ensure in-field safety and reliability, this year's Conference should prove productive for engineers working in vehicle development and similar mission critical fields.

The Device Developers’ Conference is to take place in Reading, Cambridge, Manchester and Uphall (Scotland) during May and June 2015.

"Embedded systems are playing an increasingly big role in the development of new vehicle designs,” said Barry Lock, UK Manager, Lauterbach. “Whether it is collision avoidance systems, electric hybrid control systems and even parking systems, software and hardware reliability is paramount.“

German-based debug tool company Lauterbach will be presenting a joint half-day workshop with UK software test company LDRA. The workshop will discuss how software certification aims to test every line of an application’s code to ensure that no software errors occur due to unexpected results or system failures, that could lead to death or physical harm once the system is deployed and operational. Both LDRA and Lauterbach have close working relationships with many of the world’s leading automotive systems suppliers.

“The workshop will also explore how, with the limited resources of some embedded devices, it is important to ensure developers can exercise their code without affecting performance,” said Mark James, Marketing Manager at LDRA. “Achieving this level of certification rigour on small, resource-constrained systems is challenging and has traditionally involved a lot of manual scripting to get information on and off the device. We'll cover techniques to show how to avoid these challenges which are mandated in standards such as DO-178C, IEC 61508 and ISO 26262.“

Michael Pont of SafeTTy Systems Ltd will also present a half-day workshop: Developing Safe and Secure Embedded Systems Using Time Triggered Architectures. Delegates will learn how to model TT systems, with several worked examples, and will get involved in the design and development of a generic, safety-related Electronic Control Unit; they will consider how to model, build and run-time monitor the system. The techniques explored will be readily applicable across a wide range of sectors including Aerospace, Medical and Industrial.

Chris Hills of Phaedrus Systems will give a presentation discussing the techniques and families of tools that have been developed for automotive development, starting from creating the system specification needed to validate the tests, through to final verification, and offer helpful ways of automating many of the processes.

About The Device Developers’ Conference

The Device Developers’ Conference is an annual UK event for the developers of intelligent systems and devices. The 2015 event will take place in May and June, in Cambridge, Reading, Manchester and Scotland.

Sponsored by a broad range of industry vendors, the exhibition and conference, including a series of 40-minute technical presentations, is free to engineers and project managers working in the technology sector.  Half-day workshops in various specialisms are available at a small charge.
