Young minds shine in Cambridge Building Society’s 175th birthday coin competition

Hundreds of children from across the region have been learning about the importance of looking after their money and letting their creativity shine as part of an exciting competition to mark 175 years of The Cambridge Building Society.

The Cambridge has partnered with The Royal Mint, the makers of British coins, for a fantastic design competition to create the society’s commemorative chocolate coin to celebrate 175 years of supporting the community and helping people to have a home.

Team members from The Cambridge have been visiting schools around the region to talk to children about the importance of saving their money and the history of the building society movement, which is also 250 years old this year.

The Cambridge visited Westfield Junior School in St Ives, Exning Primary School in Newmarket, William Westley Primary School near Sawston and Histon & Impington Park Primary last week – with all children taking home a competition entry pack.

Joe Andrews, Customer Engagement Team Leader, visited Westfield Junior School. He said:

“We had a great morning at Westfield talking to pupils about the history of building societies and the importance of looking after your money. The children were really engaged, had lots of good questions and were excited about our design competition.

“We can’t wait to see the amazing designs children come up with to help tell our story of helping people save and have a home for 175 years – get your entries in by 22 June!”

The winner of the competition will see their design – which should reflect how The Cambridge helps people have a home and supports good causes – made into a chocolate coin that will be available in our branches and £175 in a savings account.

The school of the winning designer will also receive up to £1000 towards a numeracy project and a visit from The Royal Mint Museum in the 2025/26 academic year.

Lee Jones, Product Design Lead at The Royal Mint and one of the judges, said:

“I am very excited to be part of this project and see what ideas the young people have.”

The competition is open to children aged 13 or under who live within a 15-mile radius of any branch or store. Children aged 13 or under who are members of The Cambridge or have parents, guardians or grandparents who are members can also enter.

To take part, pick up an entry pack from any branch, or download the competition pack from www.cambridgebs.co.uk/coincomp. Entries can be returned to any branch, head office or by emailing a photo to [email protected] by 22 June.

Established as The Cambridge Permanent Benefit Building Society in January 1850 with a mission to ‘help people have a home’, the mutual has been here to support their customers and the community every step of the way over the last 175 years.

To mark 175 years, The Cambridge has pledged to donate £175,000 to good causes and expanded the innovative Rent to Home scheme. The society will host a Community Conference in the summer and have celebrations in branches throughout the year.
